Watershed Assessment of Trout Run
Local People Working Together to Improve Our Stream
COMPLETED

Information:

  • The Moshannon Creek Watershed Coalition (MCWC) received grants from the PA Growing Greener Fund and the Chesapeake Bay Small Watershed Grants Program to perform a watershed assessment on Trout Run.
  • A watershed assessment involves identifying all pollutant sources to the stream, collecting water samples, and developing a restoration plan.
  • A restoration plan is the “plan of action” for the watershed group. It prioritizes all problem areas in a watershed, and determines the best way to treat them. It will give MCWC, the local conservation district, and the public a plan for cleaning up Trout Run.

What you will see:

  • Members of Moshannon Creek Watershed Coalition and the local Boy Scouts will be walking along the stream, maybe through your backyard.
  • They will be identifying problem areas along the stream and marking them with flagging tape.
  • They will be collecting field data such as pH and conductivity.
  • They will be measuring the seeps and discharges for flow devices. Flow devices consist of weirs (wooden devices made of plywood with a notch to measure flow) or PVC pipes (4" or 6").

How you can help:

  • You can talk with the members when you see them, helping them to identify problems or show them where they are.
  • You can tell them any information you know about the stream or what your goals would be for the stream.
  • You can attend a MCWC meeting and find out what we are doing throughout the entire Moshannon Creek watershed. Meetings are held the 4th Tuesday of every month at the Rush Township building in Philipsburg at 7:00 pm.
  • You can adopt a segment of Trout Run and be responsible for the monthly water sampling.
  • Get Involved!

The Goal: Fish in all of Trout Run!
