Osceola Mills turned 150! The event was celebrated this year in conjunction with the third annual Moshannon Creek Watershed Festival at the Osceola Mills Recreation Park.

The Moshannon Creek Watershed Festival included environmental displays, information about the activities and recently completed projects of the Moshannon Creek Watershed Coalition, an exhibit by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and water-related activities.

log cross vane structureBeaver Run Fish Habitat Improvement Project
Through the cooperation of the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and many other private organizations and individuals, fish habitat improvements were made to the Beaver Run channel in Houtzdale. Fish began utilizing the habitat structures within minutes of their installation, and a trout exceeding 20-inches in size was spotted resting in one of the log cross vanes on the day of the project. Since the structures were installed, the stream has responded as planned, and scour pools and other habitat areas have developed nicely.

Emigh Run Before/AfterEmigh Run Headwaters Relocation Project
This is a success story. The Emigh Run watershed—located in Clearfield County, PA—is severely degraded by acid mine drainage (AMD) from past coal mining activities. Through relocation and restoration efforts in the headwaters, a section of this stream has been restored, and water quality has greatly improved.

This stream was Moshannon Creek Watershed Coalition’s 1st Watershed Assessment. We had four teams of volunteers that gathered pH, conductivity, temperature, and rate of flow data, as well as water samples monthly. Each team had approximately ten sites to sample. There were a total of 40 sites where samples were collected monthly and 12 sites where samples were collected quarterly.
