Moshannon Creek Watershed Coalition’s 1st Watershed Assessment
Trout Run starts up by Sandy Ridge on top of the mountain. The stream was dammed close to its headwaters to serve as the Osceola Mills Reservoir. Approximately one half mile downstream from the reservoir the first acid mine drainage discharge dumps into Trout Run, and this pristine water is degraded to the extent that fish can not live in it. From there the stream flows past Penn Five and through Spike Island, where it dumps into Moshannon Creek just below the Osceola Mills Community Pool/Athletics Fields.

The entire stream was sampled and then walked, plotted on a map and field test analyzed, a sampling plan was developed. The sampling plan contained locations where samples would be collected for one year. We then went back to the locations and installed water-measuring devices called weirs.

Four teams of volunteers gathered pH, conductivity, temperature, and rate of flow data, as well as water samples monthly. Each team had approximately ten sites to sample. There were a total of 40 sites where samples were collected monthly and 12 sites where samples were collected quarterly.
